This Day in History

2/18/20

Erin, one of our very creative members, chose a fun theme based on history of the date: February 18th. She shared many historic happenings and facts throughout the meeting including the raising of the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi during WWII Battle of Iwo Jima, the demotion of Pluto from planetary status, publishing date of the book “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in the and the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt during a final lap of NASCAR Daytona 500.

Diana led our theme-related debate about two celebrities with birthdates on February 18th. The debate posed the controversial question: Has John Travolta or Dr Dre been more influential in entertainment. After lively discussion and important points, the team arguing for Dr Dre emerged victorious. Both members and guests participated, some with clear passion and others who began with indifference but became convinced during the course of the debate.

Molly led Table Topics with a range of questions to both guests and members. Questions included: How has travel made you a better person? What is your favorite historic event? What historical figure would you want to spend the day with if you could? Which decade would you like to be alive for? What is your favorite childhood memory?

We had 12 attendees with 3 guests. Thank you all for participating!
