Hedging Our Bets

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Do you ever find yourself saying “I kind of feel like…” or “The world is round, don’t you think?”

Taylor Mali challenges us to speak with conviction and do away with hedge words and declarative statements disguised as questions.

Rising to the Challenge

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

My manager recently told me that in our organization we need more “healthy conflict”. Essentially, we need to be more critical of other employees weaknesses so they can improve.

I told him that I don’t believe we need more “healthy conflict” instead we need to challenge people to improve and provide the support for them to rise to challenge.

My manager said “You have a very mature view of leadership.” Little did he know that at Toastmasters this is what we do every week during our evaluation of speeches.  We provide a supportive environment where people can overcome challenges in public speaking.

I’m grateful for Chamber Club for making me look smart in front of my boss, but also instilling in me a maxim of leadership that I can spread throughout my work place.
